I'm an educational publisher who has spent most of his career in the geosciences. Here are a few interesting tidbits.
Some basics about glaciers.
This video explains how the greenhouse effect works, and outlines its effect on global climate.
A stylistic rendering of how hot spots and sea mounts work.
This video gives a quick overview of what happens when a tsunami occurs.
A quick flight through the valley!
Problem solving is important to engineers. Adel Sedra is a master.
Dire Predictions 1e is a book I did in partnership with authors Michael Mann, and Lee Kump when I worked at Pearson. The goal was to employ a strong visual presentation to make the IPCC’s 4th Assessment Report accessible to introductory students and lay readers. Pearson has kept the book going since my departure. This sample is from the second edition (which I didn’t personally publish), but it has an identical look and feel to the first.
Physical Geology Today by Damian Nance and Brendan Murphy showcases a solid, traditional textbook that combines hundreds of graphics with tens of thousands of words. In the end we hope to paint a useful and compelling picture for introductory students.
This page, excerpted from Mason/Burt/Muller/ de Blij's Physical Geography, shows how embedded QR Codes can add a certain vibrancy and sense of place that can't be achieved on paper. Anyone who has ever set foot in Yosemite Valley knows how poorly this static photo captures the grandeur. I think the video helps. Point the qr code reader on your phone at this page and see if you agree. Or just watch the Yosemite Valley video above.
Contemporary Human Geography by James M. Rubenstein was another project where we used graphics to better communicate the vibrancy of human geography to introductory students. It has become one of the leading books for the course.
